Skill Evaluations Information
WHEN & WHERE?
Sunday, February 13 & Sunday, February 27
Reston-Herndon Little League will be holding its annual skills evaluations in the Rachel Carlson Middle School Gymnasium (13618 McLearen Rd, Herndon, VA 20171) .
Players should wear sneakers (no cleats!) and comfortable clothes, bring their gloves, and their favorite helmet and bat (if they have their own). Helmets and bats will also be available at the gym for those who do not have either. If there is a weather cancellation, an adjusted schedule for skills evaluations will be announced.
COVID PROTOCOLS WILL FOLLOW FCPS PROTOCOLS. MASKS MUST BE WORN BY EVERYONE WHILE INSDIE THE BUILDING. IF YOU HAVE ANY CONCERNS PLEASE CONTACT US BY EMAIL PRIOR TO EVALUATIONS.
WHO?
All players born on or between September 1, 2009 and August 31, 2014 are required to attend one of the scheduled evaluation sessions in order to be placed in a division. Advanced players born between 9/1/2014 and 8/31/2015 (League Age 7) may opt to participate in evaluations if they wish to be considered for the AA level of play and should plan to arrive either early on Feb 13 or late on Feb 27.
If you have any questions about our Divisions or age charts,
please see rhbaseball.org/divisions
WHY?
The purpose of the evaluation is to assist the Player Agent and League Commissioners in properly placing players at the level most appropriate for their skills and experience. Little League regulations require every player league age 8 and older and/or those playing AA, AAA, and Majors levels to be assessed prior to placement. The skills evaluation also helps the team managers plan for the AA, AAA, and Major league drafts. For the Spring Season, all players at AA, AAA, and Majors are selected for their teams through a draft process by the managers.
WHAT DO THE EVALUATIONS CONSIST OF?
Players will be evaluated on their fielding, throwing and hitting skills. Players may be asked to demonstrate pitching skills. It is probably a good idea to spend some time working on these skills prior to the evaluation. It may not be a good idea for the evaluation to be the first time the player has picked up a baseball or glove since last spring or last fall.
HOW CAN MY CHILD DO WELL AT THE EVALUATION?
Arrive 15 minutes before your evaluations window. Wear appropriate baseball or exercise attire, arrive with plenty of time to sign in and do some light movement/stretching. Relax, have fun, and do your best!
CAN I OBSERVE THE EVALUATION PROCESS?
We limit the evaluations to as few people as possible – League Officials, Managers (or their proxy), and volunteers assisting with evaluations. Not only does this provide a less stressful environment for the players, it helps keep the flow of the process moving along during two very busy days. It also helps keep the number of distractions at an absolute minimum.
WHAT IF I KNOW SOMEONE WHO WANTS TO PLAY BASEBALL, BUT HAS NOT YET REGISTERED? CAN THEY ATTEND THE SKILLS EVALUATION?
Yes! Walk-in registration will be available for players who have not yet registered – but pre-registration is much preferred. Be sure to tell all your friends and neighbors! Players must be registered for the RHLL Spring 2022 Baseball Season at the time of skills evaluations. Registration fees must be paid at the time of the skills evaluation.
RHLL understands that families in our community have financial needs. If your family needs assistance with payment of registration fees, please reply to this email. RHLL will provide families assistance with registration fees.
TIME SLOTS
In order to decrease wait times and make the sessions move faster, we are splitting the player pool into two relatively equal parts with the top half of the alphabet assigned to come on February 13, and the bottom half of the alphabet assigned to come on February 27. Because the evaluations will begin on Sunday mornings, we have reversed the age order between the two weeks to give families flexibility. Our primary interest is keeping players of the same age group in the same evaluation groups.
